في 23 أبريل من كل عام يحتفل العالم بـ اليوم العالمى للكتاب منذ عام 1955 وحتى يومنا هذا، اعترافا بأهمية الكتاب فى حياة الإنسانية، وبحقوق المؤلف، وتتنوع أشكال الاحتفال بهذا اليوم العالمى التى تجمع على أهمية الكتاب فى حياة كل إنسان..

وفى هذا السياق، قال الشاعر إبراهيم عبد الفتاح:

الكتاب هو المفتاح السحري لخزانة الخيال وبوابات الألق وهو الطريقة الوحيدة لنعيش أكثر من حياة، فعل الخلق وحضور الأشياء محنية على ركبتيها أمامنا مسيجة بسوار الحلم وحدائق الدهشة وزهور الخرافة..

وقال الأديب والمفكر المصري عباس محمود العقاد عن الكتاب فى يومه العالمى:

القراءة دون غيرها هي التي تعطيني أكثر من حياة واحدة في مدى عمر الإنسان الواحد، لأنها تزيد هذه الحياة من ناحية العمق، وإن كانت لا تطيلها بمقادير الحساب..

وقالت الكاتبة الجزائرية أحلام مستغانمى:

الذي يعتقد أنّنا أمّة لا تقيم علاقة عاطفية مع مكتبتها، لا يعلم بأنّ آخر ما يبيعه العراقي عند العوز هو مكتبته، بعد أن يكون قد باع أثاث بيته..

وقال الكاتب الأرجنتينى لويس بورخيس عن الكتاب حينما قال:

أردتُ امتلاك بساط سحري يحملني إلى كل الأمكنة والأزمنة، لما علمت استحالة ذلك، أطلقت العنان لمخيلتي بين الكتب..
